I hate to break in on our topic of discussion this week (and break my long-standing tradition of my blog post titles), but I had to post a few things specifically with Glenn in mind to read (though everyone should read them): Read these three articles about your favorite show, 24. I thought you'd find them interesting.
I now return you to our regularly scheduled topic.

That's quite interesting. I have never gotten into 24. I've seen an episode here and an episode there... and as such I've never had any clue as to what the hell was going on. But, as a former Special Agent for a US Government agency, let me just point out a few things that the articles neglected when it comes to the unreality of 24:
1. Feds are NOT HOT. In fact, 95% of the Feds in my office were over 55 and overweight and lacked any sense of style whatsoever.
2. All that modern technology which Feds supposedly have.... well, I have one word for you, folks: DOS. That's right, DOS.
You're right; all of the feds I've seen on TV in interviews (Tyler Drumheller comes immediately to mind) were not attractive in the least. Though the Wilsons are good looking people. But that's obviously not the most egregious of the offenses of those shows.
I watched the first episode of the new season last month (I should actually say that I watched about as much of it as I could possibly stomach) and it was extremely clear to me what the objective of that show is.
And what would you say the objective is?
Well, I was overstating; the main objective, I would guess, is to make money and entertain. But it seems pretty obvious that 24 is very handy extension of the neoconservative fearmongering; witness the ring-kissing that the Right does of the FICTIONAL actors of 24- holding "panels" and such. And suggesting that 24 be shown as some sort of requiring watching for people, as some sort of non-fiction or something. The first episode of 24 was non-stop terrorist threats, a nuclear bomb going off in a US city, just on and on, and the effect was to be filled with anxiety and the images were made to fill someone with fear. And then, of course, the orgasmic release being when Jack Bauer tortures or kills them terrist sumbitches.
Not that people who watch the show should be damned, but I think it's pretty obvious what's going on.
That comment is filled with terrible mistakes. I probably shouldn't post in a hurry.
Well, I still watch it and enjoy it. Please don't strip me of my liberal credentials.
Glenn, what would you say gives you so much enjoyment? From watching 24, I mean.
The summa (or was it magna?) has already vanished from your degree, hasn't it? I'd hate to see the whole cum laude vanish as well.
The general ass-kicking performed by Jack Bauer gives me enjoyment.
Probably when I saw Jackass 2 in the theater the whole BA degree vanished. Hopefully the people in charge of the Masters program I'm in won't find out.
