Thanksgiving has never been too much of a big deal for me. It's not that big a holiday in the old country (just one Monday off), and while it was nice to have a 4 or 5 day weekend whenever we moved to the States, it's just never been that special. We used to eat every meal together as a family as kids, and we never had extended family over.
But I haven't even been home for Thanksgiving in almost 10 years. Maybe I went my freshman year of college. I don't remember. Usually I would just buddy up with some friends (the Killians a few times, and the Schulzes) and eat with their families. The past few years I've just done things with other people who weren't going home with their families.
One thing that I get excited around this time of year for is pumpkin pie, and other pumpkin flavored items. (They have pumpkin spice beer at a lot of bars around town right now, but every single one is always out of it, so I think it's a big lie and none of them really have it. Also, people just equate "cinnamon" with "pumpkin spice," so it's probably gross anyway). Pumpkin is my favorite seasonal flavor. It's way better than peppermint (Christmas), peep (Easter), watermelon (summertime), and even cadbury filling (Easter). Maybe it isn't way better than cadbury filling, but it's still better. Even as I write this out (and maybe that's why I'm writing it out) I am wondering who in the Houston area I can call to go grab some pumpkin pie from House of Pies. This morning for breakfast I had an english muffin with pumpkin butter on it. I wish there was pumpkin flavored Cheerios or some other cereal.
Other food items I like at Thanksgiving: turkey, dressing, green bean casserole.
Does Jones Soda have a pumpkin flavored item this year?
It's been so long I forget how to conclude a blog entry.
Forsooth?

Glenn, you should totally make yourself pumpkin pie! I am using a recipe from foodnetwork.com to make one today. It doesn't seem like it will be difficult, especially because I am going to be a total lazy-ass and skip making my own pastry.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Um, we bought a pumpkin pie. Does that count? Also, despite the absurdly large amount of free pecans we have, we bought a pecan pie, too. Because who wants to have to decide between pumpkin and pecan, right?
My boss has found a good recipe for a PUMPKIN PECAN PIE, which he has promised to make for me for Christmas. I don't even like pecan pie that much (but I love grits, cornbread, greens, hoppin' john, etc, so I am still a southerner deep down). I am ready to try this magical-sounding pie, though.
um, what's hoppin' john?
When I was a kid, I always felt a bit ripped off when it came to Thanksgiving. "Ours" was never as big a deal as "theirs". We never had parades or anything, and Santa is a long way removed from mid-October. Well, he used to be.
"They" also could eat Frankenberry cereal which wasn't available in Canada. Of the two, the latter was probably more of an issue for me.
It's this black eyed peas dish we always have for New Years. I don't know that it is very Lake City, but I think it's southern, in a broad sense.
hmmm. we always had a black eyed peas dish for New Years, too. but we just called it "black eyed peas" :-)
Well, there you go!
Hoppin' john has rice and other bits in it - very tasty!
I'm not big on pumpkin - my mother made a pumpkin cheesecake that was really good, but I prefer a good pecan pie. Especially one with chocolate and bourbon in it!
We had Count Chocula in Canada. Are you sure there wasn't Frankenberry? I was never allowed to get any of the marshmallow cereals as a kid.
Exactly, I never understood why there was no Frankenberry. They were twins; their commercials were always paired together, even.
We campaigned for both (imploring our parents to drive across to Detroit for Frankenberry), but got neither.
The injustices of childhood and Canadianism.
I got some Count Chocula about two months ago for old time's sake, and it sucks now--it's all whole wheat and vitamin-y and stuff.
They say you can never go home again.
Brooklyn Lager has a really good pumpkin beer. If they have Brooklyn Lager in TX (which they probably don't because TX sucks).
And yeah Glenn you should bake a pumpkin pie. It's really easy, I made one last night. I also made a pecan and an apple pie. I guess we didn't really need three pies for four people but you know, "feast." Mmmm...food...
bwahaha - we just had three pies for three people :-)
I think we usually make pumpkin pie from the can and pecan pie from the store. Delicious AND easy!
Also, my family also celebrates my birthday a day or two before Thanksgiving (it's the week before, but we just wait until we see each other again instead of mailing things) so we always have birthday cake too.
Damn, what a great holiday.
